New hip-hop artists 2019

With three heavy-duty club EPs under his belt, the Cairo-based producer dropped his debut full-length Terminal in late 2018. It’s a dense, intricate listen that meshes hip-hop, IDM, and ambient music. ZULI’s skills as a producer are constantly on display through his unique choice of textures and his intricate, obsessive rhythms. He never loses the streetwise attitude though.

Old clothes, accessories, furniture, and junk can be fascinatingly different from city to city. Scouring the local Goodwills or thrift shops is super entertaining, affordable, and fun.  Plus it’s a great way to add to your show wardrobe.

We often forget that we can get much of our hydration from food as well, specifically plants that add a source of nutrients to our body too! Raw, uncooked foods like salads, fresh fruits, and veggies will increase your water content and keep you hydrated. Keep things like cucumbers, iceberg lettuce, cauliflower, broccoli, strawberries, and grapes in the rotation so you can “eat your water.”

Soundfly welcomes new voices each month to offer unique perspectives, shine a light on unexpected musical worlds, and help our readers find their sound.

Before founding my current project Madam West, I played and sang solo with my ukulele, usually in reaction to some breakup I was still bitter over. I referred to myself as a singer-songwriter, a term which tends to conjure up an image of a lovelorn twentysomething strumming an acoustic instrument in cowboy boots (which, in my case, was totally spot-on). In the past few years, I’ve come to redefine and expand my own definition of a songwriter. I’ve been lucky enough to meet a plethora of songwriters who push the limits of that stereotype. In addition to singing or playing an instrument, some do their own composing and full band arranging, while others write electronically, producing and/or engineering from home studios. In celebration of Soundfly’s #SongwritingWeek, here is a calendar of great local NYC songwriters to check out:

Music is such a volatile and unpredictable market. You never know when a song will take off or not. Why risk taking a one-time work-for-hire fee for a few hundred dollars when you can have X% ownership? Owning and registering a publishing percentage ensures fair compensation if the release sells well. (For a quick crash course on royalties, rights, and publishing, check out our free course, How to Get All the Royalties You Never Knew Existed.)

NBS uses a variety of data gathering processes to determine these metrics, but they synthesize everything into handy charts and models so you can better understand your fanbase in real time. This includes data from your Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter pages, YouTube/Vevo views and activity, Pandora spins and references, and more.

Scholarships for musicians not majoring in music

A bad relationship can look like anything from unresolved issues between you and a bandmate or collaborator, to being banned from a local venue in your hometown. Not prioritizing and maintaining your musical relationships can lead to major problems in your career, like people in your band quitting suddenly on tour, a bad reputation in your local scene, etc. Burning bridges seems logical in the heat of the moment, but they can come back to haunt you.

The color scheme on the aQWERTYon pitch wheel is intended to give you some visual cues about how each scale sounds. Green notes are “bright” (i.e., major, natural, sharp, or augmented). Blue notes are “dark” (i.e., minor, flat, or diminished). Purple notes are neither bright nor dark (i.e. perfect fourths, fifths and octaves). Grey notes are outside the selected scale. Finally, orange notes are the ones that you are currently playing.

Before you think about production or even buy a microphone, you must first create a plan for your episode structure. Will you have an intro and outro? Is there music? How are you licensing that music? Will there be segments or is it one long interview or monologue?

The 808 might be the only real indication of the harmony for the track, so it’s important that it feels solid. If there are chords, stick to roots, and at most try fifths and octaves.

As the company’s beautifully shot and edited video details, vinyl’s dramatic growth over the past 10 years is gravely hindered by a lack of pressing plants with the ability to fulfill the demand. Vinyl production today is expensive and time-consuming, slowing release times and often leaving artists with their backs against a wall.
